In 1929, The Economist wrote, "Can a very serious Stock Exchange collapse produce a serious setback to industry when industrial production is for the most part in a healthy and balanced condition?"
In 2008, The Economist writes, "Even as talk mounted of the rich world suffering its worst financial collapse since the Depression, emerging economies seemed a long way from the centre of the storm."
The situation, as the article continues is "No Longer."
Recessions occur. Its part of the cycle. Everyone knows this. But now, we are in a new age. This global market is heavily interdependent on emerging economies and the industrial production abroad and at home. What is our role in this? What will the future president attempt to reconcile in these markets? We know they will have help.
Obama has 7 advisors on economic policy, wile McCain has 34.
While McCain's number seems impressive there are a lot of people to sift through. The amount of research just to find out who these people are that will be making our economic policy suggestions to the possible future of the United States. And they more than likely will have some disputes on things.
Obama's seven? Who are these people? What will there role be if Obama is elected?
Even with the help of these people, what will congress do? During the Depression they added a tariff on top of an existing tariff. And while the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act has debatable impact on the economy, the fact that over 1000 economists, plus Henry Ford, and JP Morgan urged against it and it was still passed in to law says much for our leaders.
Who are these people that we are electing to run our government?

random late night thoughts
Life transitions are some of the most difficult things I have ever had to go through. Throughout my past there have been many transitions, but I have breezed through them because there were more important things to look forward to. Now I find myself in a loss. I have nothing to look forward to and only memories, happy and sad, that haunt my present. I sleep little at night, lying awake in the arms of a ghost, holding onto nothing but thoughts that drive me insane. It is the reality of changing that scares me from the possibility of "what-ifs" Sometimes pushing me so far away from all of it, that the only "what-if" I see is an empty room with chaos written on the wall

cotton sheets
i hide under my sheets thinking they would protect me.
my armor of cotton but it doesn't stop anything
it doesn't stop the screams or the tears
that wake me in my nightmares
the shivering cold that permeates through
as if a winter wind blows through an open window
it will not protect me from a thief
wanting to attack me in the middle of the night
but like a young fool in love,
i wrap myself in it
i have false hopes of its strength
promised to me by fancy salesmen
perhaps i have been fooled by the emperor's tailors
while looking for a piece of magic that doesn't exist
maybe i should let go of these old sheets,
maybe i should run to the first store i see and buy new ones
but these sheets have so much past
does a child get rid of its baby blanket as it ages?
my mother packed mine in a box in the attic.
i rarely see it anymore.

my garden
So today I planted my first plant at my new place. Its a Helichrysum petiolare "limelight" aka Licorice plant. It a beautiful shrub that has multiple medicinal purposes, but mostly for the purpose of respiration. It also can be used as a pain reliever and as a bug repellent. It is drought tolerant, as well. So if I am not around and my roommates don't want to take care of the yard, they don't have to. I think this is going to be a theme for my garden.
