a very simple couplet

the shoes i once loved are in the trash
dirty, left behind with the dust
the breaking in pain
long past
my feet are clean
no holes in the soles
neat and pristine
i feel like a queen
as i walk down the street
with brand new shoes
quiet and neat
i think of the old
better now are my feet
as my wardrobe is once again complete.

tears roll down my cheek as i reread the sadness in your eyes.
the hurt you experienced, the things i said and did that made your world crumble down
the tears roll down your eyes as you remember the past. the parties and the fights.
the tears have seen red and white, night and day, quiet and loud.
the tears have seen laughter and shouts, but the tears have left their ducts for the last time.
the tears will come out no more from laughter in the kitchen, the tears will come out no more from tickle fights and movies on the couch
the tears will see no more lonely nights waiting or early morning goodbyes.
the emptiness of the apartment will haunt us both
but the promise of a new day is strong like carol ann duffy's onion
the scent that clings to the knife,
the knife I used to stab your heart
has been washed with tears and is in the drawer.

cotton sheets

i hide under my sheets thinking they would protect me.
my armor of cotton but it doesn't stop anything

it doesn't stop the screams or the tears
that wake me in my nightmares

the shivering cold that permeates through
as if a winter wind blows through an open window

it will not protect me from a thief
wanting to attack me in the middle of the night

but like a young fool in love,
i wrap myself in it

i have false hopes of its strength
promised to me by fancy salesmen

perhaps i have been fooled by the emperor's tailors
while looking for a piece of magic that doesn't exist

maybe i should let go of these old sheets,
maybe i should run to the first store i see and buy new ones

but these sheets have so much past
does a child get rid of its baby blanket as it ages?

my mother packed mine in a box in the attic.
i rarely see it anymore.

(This is meant to be spoken, not read)

The moon that looked below, upon me, has seen the sun not yet
but this heart i wear around me has felt a tear of sweat
it trickles from a brow and soaks a pillow case
do to you that has me aroused
and cause this heart to race
a beat as fast as song
from the angels in the night sky
while i feel your touch along
and grasp for air in my mouth, so dry
now robins take angels' ends and sings of sonnet new
she sings the morning hymn
and calls us two to choir
as we leave a little grin on a sheet that has perspired
and the moon that looked below upon me has seen the sun not yet
but this heart I wear around me is soaked from tears of sweat.

MOMA cafeteria at 11:57

The asians use forks
but the black men use chopsticks

Cultures attempting to connect to cultures?
No language barrier broken
would allow them to sit together.

In the hustle and bustle of the lunchroom madness,

I see more Mark Rothko,
than Pablo Picasso.

These bricks were once graced with words
Dancers like Russian ballerinas
but the colors have now faded away
The colors so bright and so bold
are mere memories of the past

There were hands, which caressed the cement, the mortar
Creating beauty
and art
But someone didn't agree
someone had to hide
someone had to flee

the reds, oranges, and yellows
golds, and greens
No more purple, no more white

Everything went black
then blue

When we heard
I thought they were going to cut off your fingers
instead
they pulled out your heart

we all cried the day they painted over it.

Haikus

I
She said write a haiku
I thought hmm...
How do I do that?

II
Writing a haiku
It seems so simple
Like pulling out a tooth.

III
I need another haiku
I lay my head on my pillow
and fall asleep

Youngstown ohio

Seeking the sunlight,
the trees mask
forming rays of golden goddesses
they drip drop dance
down
little vials of golden sun juice

red
orange
yellow
green

pink
and brown
leaves
carpet the moisten earth.

As I walk through the golden goddesses
they drip drop dance down upon
me
in the palm of my hand

blessing me
inviting me
adopting me

On this gray Formica
barren sky-lined city day

they sunlight I sought found me.

rough draft

No skills

he says he has none, but i see the brushes stroke from his imagination
Alone in his bathroom he'll sit and draws pictures on his walls
Singing a sad melody filling the room with cold air
The breeze blows inside from the bathroom window
That was left open as she climbed out, not looking back
Humming the same sad melody.

She sits at her computer typing words away that will never be read
Listening to the sweet sound of his favorite band
And she remembers the warm sunny day when he gave her that song
But now he is gone and he is left to fight a war that serves greed's purpose
A song she never loved.

He lays in a bed cold from the emptiness that surrounds him
Silence takes over the night
Sirens blare his cry
He crushes his head into his pillow, remembering her face
As if, she was looking at him,
Only a pillow away.

Elegy

The summer days are coming closer
but its cold like early spring
The Robins chirp
while I kick around leaves from last fall as I walk up to my apartment door
I suppose I should call it ours
But we are no longer one,
We are two separate entities
living bilaterally
We ride our bikes in the same direction, miles apart.
The cool breeze blows my hair in my face
the sunlight is bright and high
But my hair blinds me
The sunlight blinds me
the way, you used to blind me
with our love
The summer days will pass too
the leaves will fall
and I will kick them
as I walk up to a strange and new door.
